Wilfred
Owen was born on March 18th, 1893 in Oswestry, Shropshire. Owen's education in his youth varied due to his
family being forced to move around. His education included places such as
Birkenhead Institute and Shrewsbury Borough Technical School. Owen passed the matriculation
exam for the University of London however, his financial status and inability
to obtain a scholarship impeded his attendance. In the autumn of 1915, Owen
enlisted in the English Artists’ Rifles. He served as a second Lieutenant with
the Manchester Regimen. During May of 1917, Owen was diagnosed with shell-shock
and was brought to Craiglockhart. During his stay he met various other war poets,
this includes Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves. Once released, Owen rejoined
his regiment but was killed in action. With the help of Siegfried Sassoon and
Edith Sitwell, Owen’s works were published for the public to see.
